Diabetic Relief Program

Steps Toward Health

Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing health crises in the world. Today, 589 million people are living with the disease — a number projected to reach 853 million by 2050. Yet many of its most devastating outcomes are preventable. Across low- and middle-income communities, limited access to proper footwear and foot care leads to ulcers, infections, falls, and amputations. Most of these complications can be avoided with early screening, education, and protective shoes.

The Samaritan’s Feet Diabetic Care Program exists to close that prevention gap.

About Samaritan's Feet

Samaritan’s Feet is a nonprofit organization that inspires hope by providing shoes as the foundation for a healthy and purposeful life. Over 30 years ago, a boy in Nigeria named Manny Ohonme received his first pair of shoes at age nine, a gift that helped him pursue basketball and ultimately earn a college scholarship in the United States. Inspired by how one pair of shoes changed his life, Manny and his wife Tracie founded Samaritan’s Feet in 2003. What began as a dream has now grown into a global movement that has served over 11 million people worldwide.

The Need

  • Proper therapeutic footwear can prevent serious complications for people living with diabetes.

  • 81% of people with diabetes live in areas with limited preventive care.

  • Diabetic foot ulcers are a leading cause of infection and amputation.

The solution is not reactive treatment. The solution is prevention.

Our Prevention Model

Through our partnership with Orthofeet, Samaritan’s Feet delivers a community-based diabetic prevention program.

Together, we provide:

  • Protective therapeutic footwear.

  • Global distribution network.

  • Foot washing and diabetic screening.

  • Education on daily foot care and prevention.

Measurable Impact

Our first diabetic program pilot in Barbados showed that therapeutic footwear combined with screening reduces ulcer risk.

Results:

  • Proven screening and fitting protocol

  • Training to expand local healthcare capacity

  • Digital tracking for reporting and accountability

  • A scalable model for global expansion
