A team of seven volunteers recently embarked on a mission to the Dominican Republic, ready to serve the vibrant communities of San Pedro de Macorís and Santo Domingo. Over the course of the week, they distributed more than 1,700 pairs of shoes, bringing hope and comfort to both children and adults.

What struck the team immediately was the eagerness of the Dominican residents to help serve. From translating and helping to size shoes, to washing feet and handing out shoes, they were always ready to lend a hand. It was heartwarming to see them so willing to wash the feet of their own community members. This mutual act of service seemed to build a special trust between the churches and the communities, so that even after the team left, these relationships would continue flourishing.

The people of the Dominican Republic were always smiling and happy. Their sense of community was palpable, constantly looking out for each other. One memorable moment was when a team member served a grandpa and his two-year-old granddaughter. About an hour later, the team member stepped outside for some fresh air and saw the grandpa passing by. He waved and then entered a nearby store, emerging with a cold bottle of water. Handing it to the team member, he said, “Because you helped my granddaughter.”

At another distribution, the ladies who helped the team serve had also prepared snacks and beverages for the team as a thank you. They continuously expressed how blessed their community felt because of the team’s efforts. This simple gesture of hospitality and kindness was another testament to the beautiful spirit of the Dominican people.

Throughout the week serving, the team noticed how many children and adults were previously wearing very worn shoes, often with holes in the soles. The joy on their faces when they received a new, comfortable pair of shoes was indescribable. The team left the Dominican Republic knowing that they not only fulfilled a basic need which would offer protection and comfort, but also filled the hearts of both the Dominicans serving and those who received shoes, leaving inspired by the love and care they witnessed.
